Stance & Swing Assist (SSA) Knee

Synchro motion has developed a stance and swing control MPC prosthetic knee which combines hydraulic stance control with low-power active swing assistance. The device is able to improve user safety and stability relative to existing prosthetic knees by supplementing the swing phase of walking with active assistance. This assistance helps to ensure full knee flexion and full extension while also allowing for an active stumble recovery response (in a manner unlike any commercial devices). This knee also modulates its stance and swing behavior to adapt to the users cadence. Preliminary experimental results also indicate that that device is able to reduce the users hip effort. This device represents a new approach to MPC prosthesis design, coupling industry-proven hydraulic stance control techniques with active swing assistance, all working to ensure the user’s safety and stability. Through a novel mechanical design, this knee is able to provide this advanced functionality while maintaining a size and weight consistent with commercially-available MPC knees.
